Supervisor Khalif Rainey Applauds Board Action on Voter ID Resolution

Resolution Provides Free Transportation to DMV for Those Needing Photo IDs

Milwaukee County Supervisor Khalif Rainey today applauded the County Board for unanimously passing his resolution authorizing County transportation services to transport without charge County residents to Department of Motor Vehicle service locations so that they can obtain government-issued photo identification required for voting.

The measure authorizes the County Director of Transportation to work with Milwaukee Transit Services, Inc. and the state Department of Motor Vehicles to develop means of transporting residents free to the DMV for photo IDs required for voting in the November election.

“The recent court ruling requiring voter ID has created chaos,” Rainey said. “It amounts to a poll tax, and we need to do everything in our power to see to it that people get the necessary identification to allow them to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed right to vote.”

Rainey said the voter ID requirement affects about 91,000 minority voters in Milwaukee County.

“Many of these people are without their own means of transportation, so we need to ensure that they are able to get to the DMV to get their IDs,” Rainey said. “I am very concerned that there may not be enough time for those without IDs to get what they need to vote. This is one way we can help voters get their IDs so that they can participate in the November election.”

The measure would cost the County about $1,300.

“It’s a very small price to pay to allow people to vote,” Rainey said. “I applaud Board members for supporting this measure, and I urge everyone to vote in November. I also urge the County Executive to sign this resolution.”
