MILWAUKEE – The County Board of Supervisors today adopted [17-1] a development and maintenance agreement between the Parks Department and South 27th Street Business District Association to create the Highway 41 Historic Garden in Wilson Park.

“Highway 41 Historic Garden will bring new life to Wilson Park,” said Supervisor Jason Haas. “This garden honors the Highway 41 neighborhood’s rich history and make the park a destination for people across Milwaukee County. I thank the 27th Street BID, the Parks Department, and the County Board for bringing this project to reality.”

Supervisor Haas was instrumental in guiding the project through the approval process and led the collaboration between local stakeholders and the Parks Department.

The design commemorates the historic Highway 41 area’s growth and development in the 1950s as well as the classic car shows held in the area. Classic cars painted and designed by local artists would be placed throughout the garden. It would also feature new pathways, perennial and wildflower gardens, new trees, picnic tables, and benches. Highway 41 Historic Garden will be the first addition to Wilson Park’s landscape in at least 10 years.

Construction on Highway 41 Historic Garden is expected to begin in spring 2022.

The South 27th Street Business District Association will make $30,000 worth of improvements to the park and fully maintain those improvements for the duration of the agreement. The initial term will last three years with the option for three additional three-year term renewals by mutual agreement.

Supervisor Haas and the South 27th Street Business District Association collaborated in January to bring new bus shelter panels to three bus stops along 27th Street. Five more sets of panels will be installed at additional stops this spring.
