Supervisor Gómez-Tom Commends Adoption of Multilingual Communication Policy
MILWAUKEE – Today, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution, authored by Supervisor Caroline Gómez-Tom, urging Milwaukee County to adopt a multi-lingual information-sharing approach. Supervisor Gómez-Tom released the following statement:
“Accessibility to vital public information is a cornerstone of equity. It is essential that our residents, regardless of the language they speak, have the necessary resources to be well-informed. This isn’t just about information; it’s about ensuring that our community members can thrive and understand the intricacies of what happens in our County,” said Supervisor Gómez-Tom. “Spanish, Hmong, and other languages play an integral role in the lives of many Milwaukee residents. They deserve representation in our communication.”
The resolution aims to ensure that county residents with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) have access to vital public information.
According to Health Compass Milwaukee 11.37% of the county’s population speaks Spanish in the home, with many homes conversing in languages other than English.
The resolution was passed unanimously by the Finance Committee before being presented to the Milwaukee County Board. It will now head to the desk of County Executive David Crowley.
