Sudden closure of south side Walgreens causes disruption in the community
Statement of Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa October 18, 2024
Today, I was informed that Walgreens abruptly closed their location at 2625 W. National Ave. on Milwaukee’s near south side. This came on the heels of recent news that Walgreens would be closing 1,200 stores by 2027, and roughly 500 in 2025. I had previously been informed that this location was to be closed in mid-November, but that after several thefts in recent weeks the decision was made to close early.
I am extremely disappointed by this development, as advance notice or communication could not be shared with the nearby residents who depend on the pharmacy at this location. We need larger corporations within our community, particularly ones like Walgreens that have dozens of locations across the city, to be good stewards to the areas they serve. In this instance, the ones left hurting the most are the residents nearby who no longer have access to the pharmacy and store they depend on, and lack an easy ability to travel further.I will work with the nearby residents to ensure they have the resources to seek out other pharmacies, and I hope future Walgreens closures are not made with this level of haste.
