Statement on the shooting at the rally of former President Donald Trump
From Common Council President José G. Pérez July 14, 2024
Political violence is unacceptable and undermines our democracy. No person, regardless of their political position or opinions, should be subject to gun violence.
The essence of democracy is the ability to debate and disagree with others, sometimes through tense emotions, and at the end of the process have respect for the results and the rights of others. That said, political violence should never be an option to ensure one’s desired political outcomes are achieved.
Although we may disagree on policy, being American binds us all together and is a greater positive force than any of our divisions.
