Statement on So-called “Personhood” Legislation (AJR 130)

MADISON – Statement from Sara Finger, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Alliance for Women’s Health (WAWH):

“AJR 130 is part of a larger anti-abortion political game. The message Republicans are sending women by bringing this bill forth in Wisconsin is chilling.

Women in Wisconsin should be trusted to make the best healthcare decisions for themselves about their own bodies. To give full legal protection to a zygote at the risk of denying women autonomy over their bodies and their lives is wrong on so many levels.”

Republican legislators introduced Assembly Joint Resolution 130 on Feb. 7th which is being fast-tracked through committee today. AJR 130 is a constitutional amendment that would change the definition of person in Wisconsin, thus allocating rights from the time of conception.

Personhood bills are part of a national conservative anti-abortion agenda and there are valid concerns about how these constitutional amendments will affect birth control options, in vitro fertilization and rights of pregnant women.
