Statement on Pro-Life Wisconsin Endorsing Brad Schimel
MADISON, Wis. — Pro-Life Wisconsin, the group opposed to 100% of abortions with no exceptions for rape or incest, has rolled out their endorsement of far-right candidate Brad Schimel and told supporters that the “easiest road” to enacting a total abortion ban in Wisconsin “will be to elect Brad Schimel to the state supreme court.” Pro-Life Wisconsin’s Executive Director posted this week to “Vote for Brad Schimel” and their Legislative Director told Spectrum News he endorsed Schimel to “undo” rulings and strip away reproductive freedoms. Pro-Life Wisconsin also announced their endorsement of Schimel in their recent newsletter.
In response, Crawford campaign spokesman Derrick Honeyman released the following statement:
“Pro-Life Wisconsin’s endorsement of Brad Schimel comes as no surprise — he’s spent years fighting to advance their extreme anti-abortion agenda. As Attorney General, he fought to restrict abortion access, and he still supports enforcing Wisconsin’s 1849 ban, which outlaws nearly all abortions in the state with no exceptions. Extreme groups working to take away rights and freedoms are rallying behind Brad Schimel because they know he’ll put their dangerous anti-abortion agenda above the rights of Wisconsinites. Brad Schimel is simply too extreme for our state.”
The Pro-Life Wisconsin endorsement of Schimel comes after the uncovering of two separate audio clips from last year, where Schimel said that “there is not a constitutional right to abortion” in Wisconsin. Schimel also exclaimed on the 1849 law that bans all abortions with no exceptions, “What is flawed about that law?”
Pro-Life Wisconsin has strict criteria for endorsing candidates, including receiving a pledge from candidates that they are “100 percent pro-life.” Pro-Life Wisconsin opposes any exceptions to abortion bans, has spoken out against certain forms of contraception, and also supports banning IVF fertility treatment.
While Judge Crawford has fought to protect fundamental rights, Brad Schimel has argued in favor of Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban, argued to keep it on the books, and defended abortion restrictions. Even now, he’s called the 1849 ban “valid.” And under Schimel, the Wisconsin Department of Justice played a leading role in the national effort which successfully overturned Roe v. Wade.
