Statement from Governor Tony Evers on Iowa’s Abortion Ban Going Into Effect After Trump Overturned Roe
Today at 8 a.m. CT, Iowa’s abortion ban will go into effect. This will bring the total number of state abortion bans from 21 to 22, and leave hundreds of thousands of women in Wisconsin’s neighboring state with fewer rights than they had before Donald Trump and his handpicked Supreme Court justices overturned Roe v. Wade. For many women in eastern Iowa, the nearest abortion provider may now be in Madison, WI.
Governor Tony Evers released the following statement:
“As of 8 o’clock this morning, Iowa women are waking up with fewer rights and reproductive freedom than they had yesterday, all because of Donald Trump and his radical agenda. Donald Trump promised to overturn Roe v. Wade, and called abortion bans like Iowa’s ‘beautiful,’” said Governor Tony Evers. “We will continue fighting to protect reproductive freedom in Wisconsin, but the only way to stop Donald Trump and JD Vance, Project 2025, and their plan to ban abortion in all 50 states is to elect Kamala Harris. Kamala Harris will sign a federal law to restore reproductive freedom and make sure every woman in America has access to the reproductive healthcare they need and deserve.”
