State Senate Republicans Advance GOP Tax Plan Favoring the Wealthy at the Expense of Working Families
MADISON, Wis. — Today, Republicans in the Wisconsin State Senate advanced a tax scheme that experts have warned would skew a majority of the benefits to the wealthiest, while completely ignoring average working families and the issues that Wisconsinites have demanded action on.
According to a news report on an analysis from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), the tax scheme passed by Assembly Republicans last fall and now advanced by Senate Republicans today will mostly benefit the top one-fifth of state taxpayers. Those with an average income of over $300,000 annually would reap roughly two-thirds of the benefits, with over 25% of the nearly $3 billion in estimated tax reductions going to the wealthiest 5%.
“While pushing a reckless tax scheme that has failed in the past and is likely to fail again, Republicans are ignoring other top priorities for Wisconsinites,” said Ripp. “It’s time to stop wasting precious time and resources on fiscally irresponsible distractions and start prioritizing every day working families.”
