State Of The State- Rep. Robyn Vining Appreciates Gov. Evers’ Focus On Wisconsin Mental Health
MADISON–Governor Tony Evers delivered his annual State of the State address today, outlining his priorities for the year. One of the top priorities outlined in his speech was addressing Wisconsin’s youth mental health crisis, announcing that his upcoming budget will include nearly $300M to provide comprehensive mental health services in schools statewide, including support for peer-to-peer suicide prevention programs and expanded mental health training. State Representative Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa), Ranking Member on the Assembly Committee on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Prevention, issued the following statement in response:
“I am passionate that every child in Wisconsin has access to the mental healthcare that they need. At a time when we have both a massive state surplus, and a tremendous rainy day fund, the Wisconsin legislature has the opportunity–and I would propose the responsibility–to step up to meet this moment and address the mental health needs of Wisconsinites. We know the need is significant, affecting every corner of Wisconsin, and I believe we have the responsibility to do a better job connecting kids with the mental healthcare that they deserve.
“I want to highlight Gov. Evers’ words today, ‘Let’s start treating our state’s mental health crisis with the urgency it requires. Yes, for everyone of every age. But especially for our kids. The state of our kids’ mental health continues to be concerning for me, both as a governor and as a grandfather…I fought hard to secure $30 million in our last state budget to support school-based mental health services in schools across Wisconsin. But that was just a fraction of what I asked the Legislature to approve.’
“I am proud to work alongside Governor Evers as we continue improving mental health support resources for Wisconsinites everywhere. With a new legislative session and a renewed sense of optimism that we can work together to find common ground for the common good, it is time to work towards bipartisan solutions to invest in the mental health needs of Wisconsin kids–because that is what they deserve. Forward, together.”
Rep. Vining represents the 13th Assembly District, which includes Elm Grove, and parts of Wauwatosa and Brookfield. For more information visit Rep. Vining’s website here.
