St. Thomas More to Host Public Showing of Award-Winning Documentary Screenagers
Members of the community who wish to view Screenagers are welcome to attend the public showing at 6:00 p.m.
September 27, 2018: St. Thomas More High School will host a public showing of the award-winning documentary Screenagers for parents, students, alumni, and other members of the community on Thursday, October 11, at 6:00 p.m. in the school’s Learning Commons.
Screenagers, created by documentary filmmaker and primary care physician Delaney Ruston, dives into the relationship teenagers have with technology in today’s digital age. The film addresses students’ struggles with social media, video games, and internet addiction and how those struggles affect the family.
“The engulfing nature of the digital age has made it extremely challenging for schools to provide guidance to students on experiencing the benefits of technology without becoming completely consumed,” school counselor Kaci Smith explained. “Screenagers is an important film in that it not only provides education on how to implement effective guidelines for positively integrating technology into our students’ everyday lives, but also the detrimental effects to the adolescent mind that can result from not doing anything at all.”
On October 11, all current St. Thomas More students will watch the film during their Enrichment Period, which occurs at the end of the normal school day. Other members of the community who wish to view Screenagers are welcome to attend the public showing at 6:00 p.m.
“It is important that we are aware of the effects social media has on our students and community,” said principal Nicholas Kelly. “We need to take the right steps to prepare ourselves for how this is changing the world around us.”
