MADISON, WI – In response to recent federal immigration enforcement incidents drawing concerns across the Midwest, Senator Melissa Ratcliff (D-Cottage Grove), Representative Andrew Hysell (D–Sun Prairie) and the first-term Assembly and Senate Democratic legislators, underscored the importance of protecting Wisconsin’s constitutional right to privacy and limiting government overreach.

“Recent ICE actions have raised serious questions about accountability, transparency, and the appropriate limits of government power,” Senator Ratcliff stated. “These events are a reminder that constitutional protections are not theoretical, they exist to safeguard people’s dignity, safety, and freedom from unwanted intrusions.”

The proposed Constitutional Right to Privacy amendment would reaffirm long-standing protections for Wisconsinites, ensuring that deeply personal decisions and private information are shielded from unnecessary government interference.

“Regardless of where someone lives or their background, people deserve to feel safe in their homes and communities,” Senator Ratcliff stated. “When government authority expands without clear limits or oversight, constitutional rights are what stand between order and abuse.”

Our Constitution must protect every Wisconsinite’s rights, especially at times like these. The proposed Wisconsin Constitutional Right to Privacy amendment isn’t political theatre or abstract language, it’s about ensuring that government power has clear limits, that individuals are protected from unreasonable intrusion, and that ALL of our core liberties are upheld.

The Wisconsin Constitutional Right to Privacy amendment seeks to preserve protections that have long been recognized by Wisconsin courts and supported by residents across the state.
