Senator Baldwin Votes to Keep Government Open, Avoid Devastating Impacts for Wisconsin Families and Economy

Legislation also extends Farm Bill programs that Wisconsin’s agricultural communities rely on

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin released the following statement after voting to avoid a government shutdown:

“Today, we passed a bipartisan package to fund the government into next year, avoiding an unnecessary shutdown which would have threatened our economy and Americans’ safety. Playing politics and shutting down the government would have had devastating impacts for Wisconsin, cutting off critical support for our troops and law enforcement, pausing funding for nutrition programs that children and families rely on, and hurting our small businesses just before Thanksgiving. This compromise also extends critical programs that help power our agricultural communities and support Wisconsin dairy farmers, agricultural research, and biofuel producers. As we work to fund the government for the coming year, I remain committed to working in a bipartisan fashion to deliver support for Wisconsin families, farmers, and businesses, while also keeping up the fight to deliver additional aid to our allies abroad like Israel and Ukraine, humanitarian aid to those in need, resources to strengthen our border, and funding to address the child care crisis and fentanyl epidemic.”

In addition to continuing to fund the government into early 2024, the legislation also extended Farm Bill programs until September 30, 2024, giving Congress additional time to continue negotiating a new long-term Farm Bill.
