Senator Baldwin Supports Bill to Prevent All-Out War Against Venezuela

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following months of bombing in the Caribbean and Pacific, the unauthorized military attack on Venezuela, and the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by the Trump Administration, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) announced she joined her colleagues in pushing forward a bill to prevent the United States from getting into an all-out war in Venezuela. The bill, the Prohibiting Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela Act, prohibits the use of federal funds for any use of military force in or against Venezuela without explicit Congressional authorization.

“President Trump stormed into Venezuela and is drawing the U.S. into another forever war just to take Venezuela’s oil and enrich his big oil buddies. Simply put, this is not what Wisconsin families signed up for. This puts all the men and women who don the uniform at risk, reeks of corruption, and just shows the President is focused on everything except lowering costs and the issues that keep Wisconsin families up at night. The President cannot just start wars at a whim; he needs to get the people’s approval – and that means Congress signing off,” said Senator Baldwin.

The Prohibiting Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela Act does not prevent the United States from acting to defend itself or its citizens from an armed attack or threat of an imminent armed attack, pursue lawful counternarcotics operations, or provide humanitarian assistance to the Venezuelan people.

The legislation was led by Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Tim Kaine (D-VA).
