Senator Baldwin, Colleagues Will Force a Vote to End Trumps Illegal War in Iran
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and her colleagues Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) announced that they will force the Senate to vote again to end the war in Iran:
“Before President Trump started his illegal and unpopular war of choice, the Strait of Hormuz was open and free of violence, gas was significantly cheaper, and thousands more people—including thirteen American servicemembers—were alive.
“This temporary ceasefire agreement—which is already being violated—starts a very short clock for Congress to finally end this unprecedented chaos. Absent immediate steps by Republican leadership to stand up to Trump’s increasingly erratic behavior, we will once again force a vote on a War Powers Resolution to finally end this dangerous war in the Middle East. The American people do not want and have not authorized it, but nonetheless keep paying the price.
“Congress must meet this moment with the urgency it demands. Senate Republicans must come back to Washington immediately to vote on a War Powers Resolution and be a check on this President, like our Founders intended.”
After the war began, Senator Baldwin and her colleagues introduced War Powers Resolutions, which require the Administration to end the war unless they receive congressional approval. The resolutions are privileged, meaning they can be brought to the Senate floor for a vote by any Senator after ten calendar days of filing. The group of Senators has pledged to keep debating and voting on the War Powers Resolutions until there are public hearings.
Immediately following the initial strikes on Iran, Senator Baldwin released a statement condemning this unauthorized military action and demanding that President Trump come to Congress before launching the United States into another potentially open-ended war. Senator Baldwin has also taken to the Senate floor numerous times in support of a War Powers Resolution to rein in this President. Additionally, Senator Baldwin co-sponsors the No War Against Iran Act to prohibit the use of federal funds for any use of military force in or against Iran without specific Congressional authorization.
