Sen. Mark Spreitzer Condemns Congressional Republican Cuts to Healthcare for Wisconsinites

BELOIT – Early Thursday morning, Congressional Republicans passed their budget bill that drastically cuts Medicaid and other services Wisconsinites rely on.

After the vote, Senator Mark Spreitzer (D-Beloit) released the following statement:

“As Wisconsinites were waking up this morning, House Republicans cut healthcare and slashed assistance to needy families to pay for tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans.

“This bill is the largest cut to healthcare in American history, with $700 billion cut from Medicaid alone, causing millions to lose coverage while healthcare prices rise. At the same time, the Republican bill also gutted food assistance programs, cutting $267 billion from SNAP/FoodShare at a time when grocery prices are high, hurting working families and seniors in Wisconsin.

“This proposal will devastate the middle class, working families, and communities across our state in order to secure tax breaks for those at the very top. I am deeply disappointed that Congressman Bryan Steil voted to hurt our communities and shared constituents.

“This Big Bad Bill is shifting costs from the federal government to states, which means Wisconsin taxpayers will pick up the tab for these programs, leaving less to invest in child care, public schools, and the Universities of Wisconsin.

“As this bill heads to the United States Senate, we must be clear: Wisconsinites deserve better. Rather than raising costs and cutting critical services, the Senate must focus on a budget that will benefit everyone in our state.”
