MADISON – Today, Governor Tony Evers delivered his 2025 State of the State address. During his speech, the Governor declared 2025 the “Year of the Kid” and announced his plans to invest in measures that would protect and support Wisconsin’s children in his upcoming 2025-27 Executive Budget proposal.

Senator Sarah Keyeski (D-Lodi) released the following statement in response:

“I am just thrilled that Governor Evers is making the well-being, safety, and mental health of Wisconsin’s children a top-priority. It is so reassuring to know that the Governor and I are on the same page when it comes to ensuring that no child is hungry in school. Tonight, Governor Evers announced his budget will include an initiative to provide breakfast and lunch to all students at no cost. In the Legislature, I am one of the lead authors of the Healthy School Meals for All bill to accomplish this goal. Whether it is through our state budget or through legislation, I certainly hope we can work in a bipartisan way to make sure no child has an empty stomach at school.

“As a mental health care provider and a mom, I am also excited to hear about the Governor’s plans to include an investment of nearly $300 million in his budget for comprehensive mental health services in schools, which would include more mental health training and peer-to-peer suicide prevention programs. This funding is essential and could truly be lifesaving. Our schools must have the resources necessary to address the mental health needs of our kids. It’s also so important that our kids are equipped with the tools to identify warning signs in their fellow students.

“Tonight, Governor Evers laid out so many valuable ways that we can better serve all Wisconsinites, especially our kids. I am energized and inspired by the Governor’s vision for Wisconsin this year, and I’m ready to get to work!”
