MADISON, WI – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kelda Roys released the following statement on the 19th anniversary of the mass shooting that occurred at Columbine High School:

“Today, I invite Wisconsinites to join me in observing a personal moment of silence in honor of the 13 victims of the mass shooting at Columbine High School. I will also reflect upon what has happened since then. A generation of young Americans has grown up with the specter of gun violence looming over them, as mass shootings have become the norm –  common, routine, and expected.

“That tragedy was preventable, and it should have been the last of its kind. Instead, it was the first in an unspeakable chain of gun violence that has desensitized us to mass murder. Too many political leaders refuse to put the lives of schoolchildren before the interests of the gun manufacturers lobby.

“After I honor the memory of the children of Columbine, and the thousands of victims of gun violence since then, I will recommit myself to action. It is inspiring to see that thousands of students will be doing the same and walking out of their classrooms to demand basic safety and security. Where our political leaders have failed, students are demonstrating courage and leadership – and they are making change.

“I join their call to pass common sense gun safety reforms to protect our schools and our communities. If our leaders refuse to do it, we must vote them out of office now. We are 19 years too late for the kids of Littleton, but if we act now, we will prevent thousands of deaths in years to come.”

Kelda Roys was the first candidate for governor of Wisconsin to have earned the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense candidate distinction and the first candidate to take the No NRA Money Pledge.
