MADISON, WI –Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“My heart and prayers go out to the parents, family, and friends of Sade Robinson, who was murdered in Milwaukee earlier this April. I stand with her mother, Ms. Sheena Scarbrough, and all her relatives in demanding closure and justice for her case. I cannot imagine the depth of their pain and loss.

This is a horrific tragedy, and it should be a wake-up call for all of Wisconsin. We must do better for our Black women and girls, who are under a staggeringly disproportionate threat of violence in our nation and in our state. As of 2020, Wisconsin had the highest homicide victimization rate for African American women and girls in the country at a rate of 20.2/100,000. In 2020 in the United States, 5 Black women were murdered every day and there were 90,333 African American women and girls filed as missing.

In October 2023, I introduced Assembly Bill 615 and Senate Bill 568 to create a task force on missing and murdered African American women and girls. Despite unanimously passing committee in both houses and passing the Assembly floor, this legislation has still not made it to the Senate floor. We cannot afford to delay this work any longer. Victims and their families across our state need justice and closure, so I am doing everything in my power to get this task force up and running as soon as possible.

To Sade Robinson’s family, friends, loved ones, and community: I stand with you, and I will continue to stand with you to ensure that not one more of our African American mothers, daughters, sisters, or neighbors falls victim to a similar injustice. I will continue to work on getting this legislation passed and be a voice for victims and their families in the State Capitol.”
