MILWAUKEE–Today, State Representative Supreme Moore Omokunde (D-Milwaukee) alongside other Milwaukee lawmakers and leading social justice and environmental groups, unveiled new legislation to hold the Legislature accountable for meeting international greenhouse gas reduction targets in Wisconsin. If passed, the Climate Action Accountability Act will require the Wisconsin State Legislature to pass legislation creating a viable plan to reduce carbon emissions by 52% by 2030. Representative Supreme Moore Omokunde made the following statement:

“You don’t have to be an environmental scientist to see the effects of climate change, from record storms to devastating wildfires. We stand here as stewards of our future generations–to ensure that they inherit a sustainable and livable planet. We are looking out for all of our constituents, including our constituents of land, air and water. We must all decide what we will do on behalf of the planet we live on.

“The best way to prevent runaway climate change is to cut our carbon emissions by 52% over the next 5 years. We cannot continue to burn fossil fuels with no plan to seek alternatives that are best for both urban and rural Wisconsinites. We must develop a plan now that centers racial and class equity and gets us on a direct path to Net Zero.

“This is why we are introducing LRB-2137—The Climate Action Accountability Act—to commit the state of Wisconsin to enacting viable greenhouse gas reduction plans. Together, we can also create the kind of long-term, family-sustaining green careers to assist in this effort—the kinds of transitional jobs that help us meet our 2030 and 2050 goals.

“We must have the political will to get this done in a bipartisan effort, and I believe that the door is open for this. I encourage my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to join us in this sense of urgency—let’s pass the Climate Action Accountability Act to require concrete and comprehensive greenhouse gas reductions at the pace and scale required to protect our communities, our children, and our planet.”

Representative Moore Omokunde represents the 17th Assembly District on the North and Northwest sides of Milwaukee.
