Rep. Tenorio Strongly Condemns Evers-GOP Backroom Deal

MADISON, WI — State Representative Angelito Tenorio (D-West Allis) announced that he will vote “no” on the surplus deal negotiated between retiring leaders Speaker Robin Vos, Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu, and Governor Tony Evers.

He released the following statement while the Wisconsin State Assembly was in recess, criticizing the closed-door negotiations behind the legislation and its failure to provide meaningful relief for public schools and working families across Wisconsin:

“Backroom deals have never served Wisconsin’s working families.

This legislation relies on the same one-time, short-term fix that gave birth to the challenges we see today. It creates an ongoing, multi-hundred-million-dollar deficit for our state while sidestepping the substantive wage reform, stronger worker protections, and long-term educational investments that Wisconsinites are actually demanding. Every constituent who has contacted my office since this deal was announced has opposed its passage.

My community needs structural change, not a temporary patch. Wisconsin needs real solutions like Assembly Bill 1176, which would actually address the persistent systemic problems facing our communities.

A rebate check of $107—the expected amount an individual with a home value at the state median would receive under this bill—isn’t going to cut it. We can continue to stay in recess until enough calls are made by Vos, LeMahieu, and Evers to get the votes they need, but they won’t be getting mine.”
