MADISON, Wis. — Today, Legislative Democrats introduced the Lowering Costs, Improving Lives package to support working families across the state. This package includes three bills: one that would lower the tax burden for low-income renters and homeowner b expanding the Homestead Tax Credit, another that would reduce grocery costs for families by implementing Healthy School Meals for All, and a third that aims to lower prescription drug prices through the Less for Rx initiative.

Representative Taylor (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement regarding the package:

“As legislators, it’s our responsibility to respond to the needs of the people who elected us. That is why we are here. People from all across our state have made it clear that they want us to take action to make groceries and prescription drugs more affordable, help them keep their homes, and ensure they can live well in Wisconsin. Today, we are making that effort to meet the needs of our constituents.

“Our Lowering Costs, Improving Lives package is designed to support working families, seniors, and residents throughout the state by easing the cost of living, so they have the freedom, opportunities, and economic security to thrive.

As an educator, I believe that it is imperative to provide healthy meals for all. It aides in assuring that they’re fed well which plays a huge part in the development of the minds of our children. I take pride in introducing Healthy School Meals for All to also assist family in every community saving on their grocery bills. When knocking on doors or even strolling through our communities, I hear from constituents about the struggles of making ends meet with the rising costs of groceries and basic necessities. This proposal stands as a practical solution that ensures that not only to ensure that students receive healthy, balanced and nutritional meals at school, but it’ll also help working parents save more on their hard-earned money. According to estimates from the USDA, this proposal would save the average family $154 a month per child, or $1848 annually per school year.

“I am especially proud to introduce legislation that expands the Homestead Tax Credit, making it progressively easier for people in our state to afford their homes. When listening to our voters, I heard firsthand about the numerous challenges low-income families and our seniors on fixed incomes face when it comes to staying in their homes. Expanding the Homestead Tax Credit is a simple, commonsense way to provide some relief to the people who need it most.

“The cost of medicine continues to rise. There are people who are led to choose on whether or not they should miss a dose of their prescribed medication in order to stretch its longevity due to medication being far too high. It is heartbreaking to hear that from our voters and that should not be an option. That is why I am proud to introduce Less for Rx legislation to lower the cost of prescription drugs in Wisconsin. Under no circumstance should anyone be forced to choose whether purchasing necessary medications and putting food on their tables for their loved ones and family.

“Our Lowering Costs, Improving Lives package offers financial relief to Wisconsin’s working families and helps improve the lives of people across the state. And this is just the beginning— there are many proposals we’ll be introducing to ensure that everyone in Wisconsin has the economic security they need to thrive.”
