Rep Moore Omokunde: “No New Nuclear Energy for Wisconsin Without a Conversation First”

MADISON— This afternoon, the Wisconsin State Assembly convened for legislative floor session. There were 3 bills relating to nuclear energy before the body: Assembly Bill 108, commissioning a nuclear siting study; Assembly Bill 132, promoting a Wisconsin nuclear power summit; and Assembly Joint Resolution 6, supporting nuclear power and fusion energy as a means to safely meet Wisconsin’s energy needs. All 3 bills passed on voice votes.

State Representative Supreme Moore Omokunde (D-Milwaukee), speaking on Assembly Bill 108, said: “I am tremendously concerned with Wisconsin’s energy future as we work towards our goal of Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050.

I feel like nuclear energy can potentially be a part of our conversation towards getting to Net Zero. This is why I support AJR6 and AB132: it’s an opportunity to have the conversation about Wisconsin’s energy future. And it’s a conversation we in the legislature desperately need to be having.

However, without
t first bringing everyone to the table to discuss nuclear energy in Wisconsin’s future, I feel that commissioning a nuclear siting study, which AB108 seeks to do, puts the cart before the horse. It moves too quickly without having everyone on the same page first. Because if you went door to door in your district today, I can almost guarantee that NO ONE is going to want a nuclear plant sited in their backyard – for health concerns, property value concerns, etc. We NEED to have the conversation first and that’s what I’m advocating for today.”

Representative Moore Omokunde represents the 17th Assembly District on the North and Northwest sides of Milwaukee.
