Rep. Christine Sinicki Comments on Gov. Evers’ Disastrous Spending Deal

MADISON, WI – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly voted to approve a “bipartisan” agreement to spend the budget surplus on a one-time check to taxpayers with a small portion going to special education funding.

Following the vote, Representative Christine Sinicki made the following statement:

“First, I want to address the smoke and mirrors deal that was negotiated by a lame duck Governor, a lame duck Speaker, and a lame duck Senate Majority Leader. These three men, who will be lounging on the beach in November and will not be returning to the Capitol come 2027, have no concern about the financial hole this will create for us in the future.

“While their topline message promises a tax rebate for Wisconsinites, a funding boost for schools, and the elimination of tax on tips and overtime, what these leaders neglect to tell you is that with the passage of this deal we are putting ourselves at risk of a structural deficit that will have to be addressed with future budgets.

“What they also aren’t telling you is that 20% of Wisconsinites will not be eligible to claim this rebate, as they need to have had a tax liability in 2024. This means those who need the money the most, people on a fixed income, for example, will not receive a check, but millionaires will receive the full $300.

“Governor Evers refused to see the bigger picture and instead focused on his personal legacy. I am looking forward to inviting a new Democratic governor into the East Wing in January, one who I hope understands the importance of working with Democrats in the Legislature.”
