Rep. Bowen Statement on Senate Joint Resolution 3 and Executive Order #105

“Wearing Masks Saves Lives!”

By - Feb 4th, 2021 04:59 pm

MILWAUKEE – In response to the Assembly’s passage earlier this afternoon of Senate Joint Resolution 3,  State Rep. David Bowen (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement:

“As a few of my colleagues put it on the Floor earlier today – who do Republican so-called ‘leaders’ think they represent? Senate Joint Resolution 3 was opposed by 59 statewide organizations representing schools and educators, business leaders, faith leaders, first responders, public health professionals, and more, and not even one statewide organization supported it. Furthermore, a majority of Wisconsinites around the state have made it clear that they support a continued mask mandate. Over and over again today, Republicans made reference to the fact that they are elected to represent the people – but then they promptly took actions to undermine their health, and to put their constituents and mine in harm’s way! I applaud my seven Republican colleagues who took a stand joining me today for science, common sense and what a majority are calling for, but I’m incredibly disappointed that, despite bipartisan opposition, Republican leadership decided to ram through this hyperpartisan, dangerous, anti-science measure.”

Earlier today, Assembly Republicans voted 52-42 in favor of concurrence of Senate Joint Resolution 3, which aimed to repeal Governor Evers’ public health emergency and statewide mask mandate with no replacement measures. That repeal was set to take effect tomorrow. However, shortly thereafter, Governor Evers announced a new public health emergency order and new mask order, effective immediately, which will replace the order repealed by Senate Joint Resolution 3.

“As disappointed and frustrated as I am with Assembly Republican leadership who keep proving their focus is on mundane fights that risk lives, I am more thankful that Governor Evers was willing to call their bluff and take a stand for people of Wisconsin who have already lost so much. I am proud to stand with Governor Evers, and I am proud to stand with the millions of Wisconsinites who know that wearing masks saves lives!”
