MILWAUKEE – Israel Ramón, Milwaukee County Register of Deeds, today issued the following statement regarding his predecessor, John LaFave, who has pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud:

“Today we received news that John LaFave has pleaded guilty to the crime of wire fraud and prosecutors are recommending 10-16 months in prison and restitution to the State of $89,000.

“When Governor Tony Evers first appointed me as Register of Deeds, I promised him, and the people of Milwaukee County, that I would be open, transparent and accountable in order to rectify the mistakes made by my predecessor and restore the trust that had been lost in government due to this corruption.

“As we continue to make good, progressive reforms in the Office I inherited, we must respect the judicial system and put this long chapter of Milwaukee County’s history behind us. I will be making no further statements about this case until it is closed.

“I look forward to continuing to work with other County Officials, my Register of Deeds colleagues throughout the State and our County Residents to make the Office of the Register of Deeds the most efficient and effective office in Milwaukee County, and I look forward to earning your trust and support when you cast your ballot on August 11th for this very important Office moving forward.”

Ramón is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, a Fellow of the Wisconsin Law Foundation, the Wisconsin Hispanic Lawyers Association, the Wisconsin Register of Deeds Association (Legislative Committee), the Property Records Industry Association (Best Practices Committee), the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, the ACLU of Wisconsin, Citizens Action of Wisconsin and Voces de la Frontera.
