Reckless driving leads to more unnecessary loss of life

Statement of Common Council President Cavalier Johnson August 16, 2021

By - Aug 16th, 2021 10:25 am

Last night two more residents lost their lives due to street racing and reckless driving in Milwaukee, and I send my well-wishes to the family and friends of those who passed.

One of the two drivers involved in the street racing is in custody, but authorities are still searching for the second suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact Milwaukee Police at 414-935-7360 or crime stoppers at 414-224-TIPS or P3 Tips App.

This is the second such incident of street racing that has resulted in a fatality in recent weeks, and at this point the reckless driving problem in Milwaukee has been well documented.

As an elected official tasked with improving our city, as someone who drives the streets of Milwaukee regularly, and as a parent whose children will eventually share the road with others, I continue to be angered and upset by these incidents because they are not accidents and are simply 100% avoidable.

While steps have been taken to combat reckless driving, we must continue to push for more. I’m calling on the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works to begin the process of altering built infrastructure, especially on State Highways in Milwaukee, that would physically disrupt the ability of reckless drivers to partake in these actions.

I’d also encourage residents to continue discussing the dangers of reckless driving with their family, friends and neighbors, and to report reckless driving in your area by visiting https://mpdtsu.org/.
