Project to improve street lighting in District 5 to kick off July 1

By - Jun 25th, 2025 09:59 am

Alderman Lamont Westmoreland is excited to share with residents that beginning July 1 construction work will begin to enhance street lighting circuits in parts of District 5. This $1.1 million project aims to improve the quality and efficiency of the existing circuit to meet Milwaukee’s goals of sustainability and quality of life for citizens.

The first phase of the job includes conduit boring in the terrace area and pull box installation. After the conduit and pull box installation is completed, the contractor will install new underground lighting wiring, replace/relocate poles, and install new energy efficient LED fixtures. During this time, parking space and traffic flow will be reduced within the work area. Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted from 7 a.m. to 5p.m. from Monday to Friday to allow the contractor to gain sufficient access for the construction equipment. The impacted areas will include portions of the Kops Park and Golden Valley neighborhoods. The full project map is attached and additional information can be found here.

“The forthcoming improvements in street lighting are much needed and will represent an improvement to quality of life for those in the impacted area,” said Alderman Westmoreland. “This is part of the Department of Public Works’ larger plan to upgrade all eligible street lights to LED by 2026. District 5 has already seen improvements in some areas, with others still in the works. I want to thank the department for their continued commitment to improving this aging infrastructure.”

Residents who experience street light outages are encouraged to report them online, by calling (414) 286-CITY, or by contacting the Alderman’s office.
