“Our Democracy Is Not For Sale”
–Rep. Robyn Vining on Overturning Citizens United
MADISON–Rep. Robyn Vining and Legislative Democrats introduced a joint resolution today for a statewide advisory referendum recommending that Congress overturn the Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court ruling. Citizens United legalized unlimited corporate involvement in US elections. Rep. Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa) released the following statement:
“Americans deserve a democracy that isn’t sold to the highest bidder. Citizens United v. FEC is the United States Supreme Court ruling that corporations are “persons” for the purpose of political speech, allowing unlimited corporate spending in political campaigns. This was a terrible court ruling that harmed our democracy, and diluted The People’s voice–it needs to be overturned. Our democracy is not for sale.
“I join my colleagues today to introduce a resolution to ask Wisconsin voters if we should amend the Constitution to get corporate influence out of our elections. Congress should do what it takes to overturn Citizens United, which overturned 100 years of precedent and made elections in Wisconsin more expensive and less transparent at the peril of our democracy.
“Our democracy should not be for sale, and it is time to overturn Citizens United. Wisconsinites want and deserve a government that works on their behalf to address the issues they care about–to find common ground for the common good. Forward, together!”
Rep. Vining represents the 13th Assembly District, which includes Elm Grove, and parts of Wauwatosa and Brookfield. For more information visit Rep. Vining’s website here.
