Program will feature one-on-one or small group story time in 60 Next Door classrooms

Milwaukee (April 30, 2019): Next Door — a leading provider of high quality early childhood education in Milwaukee — is looking for volunteer readers to fill up 60 classrooms with more than 600 children for a Community Read with Me event on Tuesday, April 30, 2019. This special occasion is part of Next Door’s 50th Anniversary celebration this year and hopes to raise awareness about the importance of building childhood literacy in the first five years of life.

“Exposing children to books and reading is so critical in the early years because their brains are developing so rapidly at this time,” said Next Door President Dr. Tracey Sparrow. “Through early exposure to literacy, the children begin to build an understanding of what a book is, how it works and how much joy reading can bring to their life!”

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Program runs from 9 am to 11 am.
  • Two Next Door locations: 2545 N. 29th Street and 5310 W. Capitol Drive.
  • Opportunities to read with infants and toddlers and three- to five-year-old children either one-on-one or in a small group.
  • Individual or group volunteers are welcome.
  • To register, please email Next Door Volunteer Coordinator Martina Stevens at mstevens@nextdoormke.org.
  • Program begins with a brief event orientation and presentation about the work of Next Door. Building tours will be available afterwards.

In addition to the volunteer reading program, every Next Door student will receive a free book to take home on April 30th and help grow their home library.

The Community Read with Me program is the latest event tied to Next Door’s 50th Anniversary celebration this year. Next Door is hosting a year-long anniversary campaign to celebrate this major milestone and raise community awareness and support for Next Door’s early childhood education programming for central city families. That programming includes multiple literacy initiatives such as Next Door’s popular Books for Kids program, a Literacy Coach in Residence for teachers and a new cohort of Marquette University students serving as early literacy tutors for our students.
