New Wisconsin Law Allows No-Court Divorce
November 20, 2025 | Milwaukee, WI — A new law was passed by the Legislature and recently signed by Governor Tony Evers that will allow couples in Wisconsin to finalize their divorce without appearing in court IF they work jointly with a lawyer-mediator or are both represented by attorneys and the court approves. This legislative change recognizes that many couples want a cooperative and family-centered approach to divorce.
“This is a positive option for Wisconsin families,” said Susan Hansen, co-founder of the Family Mediation Center. “For years, we’ve helped couples navigate separation and divorce in a way that prioritizes respect, cooperation, and out-of-court decision-making and resolutions. This change provides a path for couples to obtain legal education and resolve divorce matters without the necessity of a court appearance.”
As the new law takes effect, Family Mediation Center encourages separating couples to explore mediation as an efficient and cost-effective alternative to traditional divorce proceedings.
