Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, a longtime advocate of eliminating food deserts and providing fresh foods to underserved communities, is urging community partners to apply to the Fresh Food Access Fund during the coming week, with new grants now available to support healthy food initiatives in Milwaukee.

The latest round of grants from the city’s Fresh Food Access Fund (FFAF) will provide a total of $100,000 to support for-profit and not-for-profit efforts that increase the availability of healthy food options in underserved areas. Applications for this round of grants must be submitted by 4:00 pm (CT) on Friday, May 12, 2023.

More information about the program is available at milwaukee.gov/FFAF.

Alderman Rainey said is looking forward to funds being issued and utilized. “I was proud to lead the Common Council legislation that created the Fresh Food Access Fund to support healthier families and neighborhoods in Milwaukee,” said Alderman Rainey.

“It is clear that an important part of reducing poverty and health disparities in our community is addressing the food inequalities that exist in Milwaukee. The data clearly indicates that residents who lack access to healthy, nutritious foods are at greater risk for higher rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and a host of other health consequences related to diet and nutrition,” said Alderman Rainey. “This is why the Fresh Food Access Fund is so vital, and I urge those who want to help address this issue to apply today.”

FFAF grants can go toward an array of initiatives that promote healthy food goals. The FFAF is expected to draw grant applications that add and improve healthy food access at retail locations and not-for-profit agencies. In previous years, matching Fresh Food Access Fund grants have been awarded to 41 different projects.
