MTEA Statement on Passage of Mask Requirement by Milwaukee Common Council
The Milwaukee Common Council approved a measure that would require indoor masking in the City of Milwaukee.
Today, the Milwaukee Common Council approved a measure that would require indoor masking in the City of Milwaukee. MTEA President Amy Mizialko issued the following statement:
“We are glad that something has finally been done by leaders in Milwaukee to mitigate the out of control spread of COVID-19 in our city, and we hope that Acting Mayor Johnson will sign the measure without delay.
“While we continue to support a stronger indoor mask requirement with clear enforcement guidelines, we understand that by being subject to the legislative process and the compromise it requires that this measure was likely to be weakened.
“A response to a public health emergency is not something that should be compromised on, and it should not be subject to the sluggish process of a legislative body. That is why Wisconsin law has equipped cities with health commissioners who have the authority – and the responsibility – of taking swift action to prevent and control the spread of communicable diseases in their jurisdiction.
“Unfortunately, Milwaukee’s health commissioner made a calculated choice to neglect this responsibility, forcing Milwaukee to endure the full brunt of a surge whose impacts could have and should have been far more manageable for schools and businesses and the families who depend on them.”
