MPD Twitter statement a misguided dig at local leaders

Statement of Common Council President Cavalier Johnson June 11, 2020

By - Jun 11th, 2020 04:54 pm

Today the Milwaukee Police Department via their Twitter account (@MilwaukeePolice) shared the following message: “MPD is committed to serving our community with the resources we are afforded. However, the Mayor and Common Council reduced our budget by 60 police officers this year. The homicide rate has more than doubled & non-fatal shootings have increased by over 35% since 2019. #DidYouKnow”

I am calling on MPD to immediately remove this post. Putting the information contained in this tweet aside, issuing political jabs at local Milwaukee leaders in a forum such as this is a misuse of resources.

We must work to heal and improve our community together and not resort to petty social media barbs.

#DidYouKnow there’s very little those 60 police officers could’ve done to **prevent** (m)any of those homicides or non-fatal shootings; they’re nearly completely a **reactionary response** to the events. Let’s hope the budget for those 60 officers went to Reggie Moore’s Office of Violence Prevention instead.

Also, they’re likely playing fast-and-loose with the numbers. The percentages provided are most likely year-over-year comparisons, so June 2019 to June 2020, and they don’t provide context here on **when** the increases actually occurred relative to any of the officer departures, which, BTW, were all through normal attrition.
