MPD Announces Updates Regarding ABLE Training and New Firearm
MILWAUKEE, WI— In March of this year, the Milwaukee Police Department began implementing the Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) curriculum through our Police Academy. ABLE teaches police officers strategies of active bystandership, to prepare officers to successfully intervene preventing harm to themselves or others, and creating a law enforcement culture that supports peer intervention. Recruits, veteran members, neighboring agencies and even some city officials have received this transformative and necessary training.
We are proud to announce that currently, 1,547 out of our 1,623 sworn members have become ABLE Ambassadors. Our current recruit class will receive the training in the near future.
Recently, MPD announced that we were replacing our firearm due to concerns from our members and the Milwaukee Police Association (MPA). MPD examined those concerns and after consulting with Mayor Johnson, the Common Council, Fire and Police Commission and the City Attorney’s Office we were able to acquire a new platform.
We currently have a small compliment of the new Glock firearms, which the recruit class (02-2022), that started on October 17, 2022, will be trained on. Furthermore, MPD will begin the department-wide transition to the new firearm in January 2023 with the goal of having all sworn members trained by early spring 2023.
Finally, the Fire and Police Commission is currently accepting police officer and police aide applications. The application period was extended until December 21, 2022, for Police Aide and until December 22, 2022, for Police Officer.
