Milwaukee, WI, April 24, 2024 – USA Today has announced that the Milwaukee Public Market has been named the nation’s best public market in the 2024 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

After a rigorous nomination process and month-long period of public voting, the Milwaukee Public Market emerged as the winner among 20 nominees from across the country. Paul Schwartz, Executive Director of the Milwaukee Public Market, and of Business Improvement District #2, expressed his gratitude: “We knew that our public market held a special place in the heart of our community, but we are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of support that we received during the voting process.”

Eastern Market in Detroit and Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia were awarded 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. Public markets, exemplified by these diverse institutions, are vibrant, community-focused marketplaces. They act as commercial centers while also serving broader public objectives such as fostering neighborhood revitalization and promoting community well-being. The product offerings at public markets can range extensively—from fresh and prepared foods to crafts and apparel —depending on the market’s focus.

The Milwaukee Public Market, operated by the Historic Third Ward Business Improvement District #2, has become a social hub for locals and travelers alike, going beyond traditional commerce by embedding itself deeply in the fabric of the community it serves. It hosts vibrant community-building events such as the free Riverwalk Commons Concert Series and the annual Harvest Festival. Additionally, it supports impactful initiatives like the Milwaukee Public School’s ‘School to Work‘ program, which provides practical career training to special needs students within the market’s dynamic environment and other community-focused initiatives that support local health, education, and social services.

“This distinction as the nation’s top public market speaks volumes about our wonderful community,” added Schwartz, “It’s truly a city-wide achievement that is reflective of the spirit and strength of Milwaukee as a whole. On behalf of our vendors, who are the driving force behind this recognition, we are beyond grateful for this acknowledgement!”

The Milwaukee Public Market, located at 400 N. Water St., invites guests to visit them daily from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sundays, and to follow them on social media @milwaukeepublicmarket.
