This week, the Milwaukee Police Association announced its endorsement for Tim Michels for Governor of Wisconsin.
“After speaking with Tim Michels, it’s clear he shares our same vision for a safer Milwaukee,” said Milwaukee Police Association President Andrew Wagner. “During these increasingly trying times, the over 1,400 men and women of the Milwaukee Police Association appreciate leaders like Michels who are willing to stand and be an advocate for law enforcement professionals.”
Under Tony Evers’ failed leadership, Milwaukee has been fraught by rising violent crime. In 2020, the city broke the record for homicides for the second year in a row. This announcement follows Michels’ endorsement by the Kenosha Professional Police Association.
“Everyday, our brave men and women in law enforcement put their lives on the line to protect Wisconsin families,” said Tim Michels. “I’m proud to have earned the Milwaukee Police Association’s support, and as governor, I look forward to working hand-in-hand with them to make sure our officers have the resources they need to keep our communities safe.”
Tim Michels is the pro-law enforcement candidate in this race. As governor, Michels has pledged to prioritize public safety, incentivize the hiring of more police officers, and impose state aid reduction for those who attempt to defund the police.

Nobody ever says “f*## the Fire Department”. #ACAB
So sad, a pollice association that supports someone who is in favor of Trump”s defience of the law .
Years ago, on JS editorials and ideas pages, I suggested that police work with area technical schools to develop tiny drones that could be released from dashboards of squad cars, and, connected to touch screen GPS pictures, could land on the cars of perpetrators, and slow, stop and lock their cars, so police would not have to do highly risky high-speed chases. Drones could do such chases much more safely for police and bystanders. Meanwhile, in nearly 10 years, nothing has been done and we STILL have stupid, risky high-speed chases that kill people. May I ask when our Government, Police Departments and technical schools will get together and make this happen? I have no patience for stupidity. And these days, with available technology, high speed chases are simply unnecessarily stupid and dangerous. Can we not use our brains and lessen risks for police and residents? When a perp has to be caught, can we not utilize drone technology? We are in the 21st century. Can we please act like it and use the resources, technology and science available to us? The same goes for using drones for police home searches. Why risk the lives of officers or innocent residents (as when police go to the wrong houses)when drones can “see” just as well—if not better (because they can also be created to detect drugs and other odors!). And a drone would be programmed with correct addresses automatically double-checked to prevent errors.
Lies, lies and more lies. Tony Evers has supported the police. Republicans do not. It is due to Republicans in Wisconsin, not Tony Evers, that larger cities do not have the funds they need to provide required police protection. Republicans will not allow more police funding if Michels gets elected.
Republicans are the “Defund the police” party, as that is exactly what the state legislature has done to Milwaukee and Madison. Why would any police union support Michels over Evers?
From PolitiFact:
– Evers has said he is opposed to slashing police funding and that such a demand “goes too far.”
– The governor has directed more than $100 million in federal COVID relief money to support law enforcement.
– Evers has also said he backs helping Wisconsin communities tackle rising crime by getting more money for police through increased shared revenue.
– The sources for this fact-check: https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2022/may/20/rebecca-kleefisch/democrat-evers-not-big-proponent-defunding-police-/#sources
Republicans oppose getting more money for police through increased share revenue, or any revenue source.
The majority of Milwaukee police officers don’t live in the City of Milwaukee… Tim Michels doesn’t live in the State of Wisconsin… Wish there was a way we could put carpetbagger Michels and the carpetbagger cops on a spaceship to Mars.
Many police wonder why they don’t have more public support when their leaders continually endorse the most extreme conservative politicians and engage in flaming rhetoric against anyone they disagree with.
A letter to the new Chief of Police
Dear Chief Norman
First thanks for all that you do for Milwaukee. I lived in Milwaukee for some 30 years and it still is “my” city that I know well.
As I thanked John, Thanks for coming and supporting yet another effort for decreasing and or eliminating murder in Milwaukee.
A few morning thoughts as I call them.
What can you do and your officers do that will in the long run make your jobs much safer and easier?
As you well know many of the officers can see the future and they KNOW what the future holds for a kid if “things” do not change for that kid. While there is sometimes personal efforts made that will change the outcome for a kid there is little today that allows the officers to have an impact on all the kids who desperately need therapy to address the trauma that they have or are experiencing.
As you know the officers are the first to really know the story ie the abuse of kids by parent and then also spousal abuse (seems to have been part of the trauma experience by the July 4 Highland Park killer).
As you know if that abuse is not addressed it only festers until there is reason to arrest the individuals for some socially unacceptable behavior that is labeled a crime.
Images the Broken Window (not fixed) the small fire (not put out). Yes the police see these and know the rest of the story. Decay and multiple houses on fire
If the officers do not have training about how the developing brain of a child works it probably would be useful. The work of Dr Bessel van der Kolk in The Body Keeps the Score describes it well in part 2. This understanding will allow the officers to see, the social unacceptable behaviors of the kids they are dealing with, in a different light.
Just as you purchase all sort of equipment to protect the officers themselves and the public there is an additional “purchase” that needs to be purchased. Referrals for therapy services (maybe with rewards)(not part of your budget) that the officers can provide to those kids and families where it is clear that if there is no change, the outcome will not be good for the individuals nor the society. While a murder, for all personally involved, is traumatizing that murder also traumatizes that community as well.
Morning thoughts as I call them
Again THANK YOU for all you do
Peace
Thomas Spellman
PS will gladly explain in non academic terms the importance of Why They Kill and The Body Keeps the Score
yes, that makes sense. another way to garner the support and confidence of we who live in milwaukee. support a person for gov. who actually supports insurrection and the breaking apart of our democracy. i am one person who now questions the majority of police actions and beliefs. i trust them less now with this endorsement.
