MILWAUKEE – On Saturday, September 18, the City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention will host the final Summer of Healing event at Sherman Park (3000 N. Sherman Blvd.) from 2 until 5 p.m. Coinciding with Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, this event will focus on suicide prevention and provide resources for those who are struggling with suicidal thoughts or have been impacted by suicide. All month, mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention awareness.

“Suicide can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, gender, or background,” said Vaynesia Kendrick, Community Outreach Specialist for Adolescent Suicide. “It’s imperative we provide these resources so our community has the tools to support loved ones experiencing crisis.”

Resources at the event will be available from Community Medical Services, Milwaukee Fire Department, Office of Children’s Mental Health, Rogers Behavioral Health, and Wraparound Milwaukee. Community members who have been impacted by suicide will also be on-site to share their lived experiences.

Additionally, attendees can participate in a healing activity lead by a clinician, a commemorative bubble release, and writing an encouraging message to themselves or a memory of someone they have lost to suicide on a physical message board. Entertainment will be provided by The Village Drum Company and singer Kayla Burford.

Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention and 414Life will canvass the Sherman Park neighborhood from 3 to 4:30 p.m. to inform neighbors about the event and provide door-to-door resources about suicide prevention.
