Milwaukee Health Department Conducts Follow-Up Lead Hazard Assessment at MPS’s Golda Meir Lower Campus
(MILWAUKEE) — The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) conducted a follow-up lead hazard assessment today at Milwaukee Public Schools’ (MPS) Golda Meir Lower Campus as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of students and staff.
During today’s reassessment, 12 surface wipe samples were collected for lead hazard evaluation. While the majority of samples met clearance levels, two areas did not pass upon initial testing. MPS is currently creating a plan in consultation with MHD to address the two areas that failed and ensure they are up to standards by the time students return to school on Wednesday, February 19. MHD is confident MPS will be able to achieve full clearance by the completion of the health order on Thursday, February 20.MPS is continuing cleaning and abatement efforts to address remaining hazards. Additionally, students will not be in school on Monday and Tuesday due to previously scheduled days off, allowing additional time for mitigation work to continue.
Both MHD and MPS are pleased with the significant progress made so far and will continue working closely to ensure all necessary remediation is completed. Further updates will be shared with families, staff, and the public as more information becomes available.
