Milwaukee, Wis. — The Milwaukee chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America is thrilled to congratulate Missy Zombor on winning her race for Milwaukee Public School Board Citywide seat.

“This shows that a socialist candidate who unapologetically supports public education, workers’ rights, and the dignity of all Milwaukee students and their families can run and win in a competitive race,” Milwaukee DSA Co-Chair Anna Dvorak said.

“Missy’s campaign had a lot of support from organized labor, for good reason,” Milwaukee DSA Co-Chair Alex Brower said. “In Missy, Milwaukee students and educators will have a champion for public education who won’t sell out their right to a quality education to privatizers.”

Milwaukee DSA endorsed Milwaukee Public School Board President Bob Peterson for the same seat in 2019. Missy Zombor will succeed him in her new role on the school board.

“Tonight, Milwaukee voters chose schools controlled by the community and not a handful of wealthy donors, the chamber of commerce, or private school profiteers,” Missy Zombor said. “This campaign was a heartfelt gesture of appreciation to our educators to assure them that we’re going to fight for them just as passionately as they fight for our children every day.”

Sam Harshner ran a strong race for Shorewood Village Board Trustee and came less than 200 votes shy of winning a seat against two incumbent candidates.

The fact that an open socialist running a strong race in a suburban community and come that close to winning is a testament to the growing strength of our movement.

“We are building power in this city, and it’s showing,” Sam said. “Our grassroots organizing and Milwaukee DSA’s capacity to contest elections across the metropolitan area shows that our movement is growing in strength, and we won’t be stopping anytime soon.”

Milwaukee DSA is also relieved that Milwaukee Judge Janet Protasiewicz beat Daniel Kelly for Wisconsin Supreme Court, and hopes this leads to the rightful repeal of Act 10 as well as the state’s regressive 1849 abortion ban and gerrymandered district maps.
