Milwaukee County Historical Society Presents Author Talk with Historian James Marten
The Milwaukee County Historical Society (MCHS) is pleased to announce a special Author Talk with acclaimed historian James Marten on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 11:00 AM to Noon at MCHS, located at 910 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Milwaukee, WI.
Marten will share insights from his newest publication, The Sixth Wisconsin and the Long Civil War: The Biography of a Regiment. This compelling work presents the story of the war and its aftermath through the lens of a single regiment, the Sixth Wisconsin. One of the core units of the famed Iron Brigade, the Sixth was organized in July 1861 and mustered out in the summer of 1865, playing major roles at Second Manassas, Antietam, and Gettysburg, and in the Overland campaign of 1864. The full history is found in the stories of its men learning to fight and endure far from home amid violence, illness, and death, and in the lives of families that hung on every word in letters and news from the front lines. This free event is included with general admission, and registration is preferred. Visit milwaukeehistory.net/visit/events for more information and registration.
As part of its community-wide programming, MCHS has selected The Sixth Wisconsin and the Long Civil War as the MCHS Book Club selection for May 19th at 6:00pm. Copies will be available for purchase in the MCHS gift shop, where members receive a 10% discount.
