Milwaukee County Department Of Transportation Kicks Off 2025 Highway Cleanup
MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT) 2025 annual spring highway cleanup is underway. On Monday, MCDOT crews began picking up litter along I-43/94 near Holt Avenue. They will continue throughout the week until all 1,800 highway lane miles maintained by MCDOT have been addressed.
“Each year, our spring cleanup effort highlights the work our highway maintenance crews do to maintain safe and efficient roadways, while also reminding us that we all play a role in keeping our community beautiful,” said County Executive David Crowley. “Ensuring litter is properly disposed in the first place is the best way keep Milwaukee County looking its best for families and visitors as the weather warms up.”In 2024, MCDOT crews removed more than a million pounds of litter from state and county highways. Residents who are interested in helping keep Milwaukee County litter-free are reminded to properly dispose of waste to prevent it from collecting on our roadways and in our neighborhoods. Those who are interested in helping reduce litter in the community are encouraged to get involved in neighborhood cleanup events or to volunteer with WisDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway Program.
“This year, we want to remind people that they can help reduce the amount of trash on our roadways by making sure trash goes into a bin instead of onto our roads,” said Milwaukee County Highway Director Eduardo Santiago. “Not only will this improve how our community looks, it means our crews can dedicate their time to important highway safety and maintenance activities instead of litter pickup. “
About MCDOT Highway Maintenance Services MCDOT, like all 72 Wisconsin counties, contracts with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) to provide maintenance services for state and county highways.
