Milwaukee County Board Veers Out of Its Lane in Politically Motivated Referendums
MILWAUKEE – On Thursday the County Board of Supervisors adopted two referendums to appear on the November General Election ballot for Milwaukee County voters: 1) regarding “prohibiting the import, sale, manufacture, transfer, or possession of semi-automatic ‘military-style’ firearms” (22-776) and 2) regarding “allowing adults 21 years of age and older to engage in the personal use of marijuana, while also regulating commercial marijuana-related activities, and imposing a tax on the sale of marijuana” (22-800).
County Supervisor Steve F. Taylor released the following statement on the referendum votes:
“Yesterday the Milwaukee County Board adopted two advisory referendums under the disguise of garnering public input when in fact they are politically motivated and are issues in which the Board cannot effectuate policy change.
“Why put these questions on the November ballot when the County Board had no authority to set policy you ask? Because these two ballot measures are meant to ramp up the Democratic vote to re-elect Governor Evers and defeat Senator Johnson.
“Decisions like this are unfortunate because it takes focus away from the important work that still needs to be done as well as pits us against the Republican-controlled legislature who controls Milwaukee County’s financial future.”
The two referendums come at a cost of $36,000 to the taxpayers.

Thank you County Board for addressing the terrible epidemic of gun violence in our country. And for showing leadership in the fight to decriminalize marijuana use for adults. Too many of our citizens are in jail/prison for personal use of marijuana while those with money and means use many illegal substances with impunity
With Republicans continuing to ignore the concerns of the majority of the voters, any opportunities for the electorate to express their concerns is warranted. Republicans are seem to thing that citizens voting in our Democracy is a form of tyranny.
The people’s voices are to be heard! Mr. Taylor, will you listen?
