Milwaukee County Board Celebrates Latiné Heritage, Culture, and Contributions
MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors is recognizing September 15 through October 15 as Latiné Heritage Month, celebrating the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America throughout Milwaukee County and across the nation. Chairwoman Nicholson-Bovell, Supervisor Gómez-Tom, and Supervisor Miguel Martinez championed the resolution in 2023 that formally recognizes Latiné Heritage Month in Milwaukee County.
“Latiné Heritage Month celebrates the people, families, traditions, and stories that make Milwaukee County stronger and more vibrant,” said Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson, the first Afro-Latina to lead the Milwaukee County Board. “Being a woman of Puerto Rican descent and Chairwoman to the largest Latiné population in the state, this month feels especially meaningful. It is an opportunity to honor where we come from, celebrate the generations who have built community here, and recognize the many ways Latiné residents continue to shape the future of Milwaukee County and beyond.”
“It’s more important than ever to continue to uplift the contributions of our Latiné brothers and sisters in Milwaukee County,” said Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez. “Our communities have sewn vast amounts of culture, pride, and strength into the fabric of our County. This month is a reminder of the great responsibility we hold of lifting each other up and creating a stronger future for the generations that come after us.
“Latiné Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the many ways our communities help Milwaukee County thrive,” said Supervisor Caroline Gómez-Tom. “Our cultures, languages, traditions, and experiences are part of what makes Milwaukee such a special place to call home. I’m proud to celebrate our heritage and continue working to make sure every resident has the opportunity and resources they need to thrive.”
Throughout Latiné Heritage Month, Milwaukee County encourages residents to celebrate and learn more about the history and contributions of Latiné communities in Milwaukee and beyond.
Many Milwaukee institutions are marking Hispanic Heritage Month with opportunities for residents to celebrate, learn, and engage with Latino history and culture. Milwaukee Public Museum and Milwaukee Area Technical College are hosting Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations with cultural performances, educational programs, and other activities for students and the community.
