Mayor Johnson Names Buford to Head the Office of African American Affairs
Melissa Buford, a respected member of Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s administration, will be named to lead the city’s Office of African American Affairs. The appointment will require action from the City Service Commission prior to Buford assuming the office.
“Melissa is a talented and accomplished individual who gets things done. I have high expectations she will continue her exemplary work in this new role,” Mayor Johnson said.
Buford worked for Milwaukee Public Schools, including time in classrooms, before joining the Mayor’s staff in 2022. She holds a graduate degree in education and is actively engaged in community service.
Buford succeeds Khalif Rainey who announced earlier this week he is stepping down.
“Khalif has served city government as someone who brought new ideas to his work. As an alderman and an administrator, he prioritized the best interests of our residents,” Mayor Johnson said. “I wish him success in his future endeavors.”
The Office of African American Affairs promotes fairness and opportunity through a range of activities and programs. Its events and outreach advance skills and empowerment in ways that maximize city residents’ potential.
