On Tuesday, December, 17, 6 p.m., Milwaukee Area Technical College will host its 2024 Winter General Education Development (GED)/High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) Graduation ceremony in Cooley Auditorium, first floor, in the Main (M) Building at MATC’s Downtown Milwaukee Campus, 1015 North Sixth Street.

Nearly 300 students will be honored for earning General Educational Development (GED) certificates or High School Equivalency Diplomas (HSED). The ceremony recognizes students who graduated from MATC and five community-based educational partners – Dominican Women’s Center, Emerging Scholars, Literacy Services of Wisconsin, UMOS Inc. and YWCA Southeast Wisconsin.

The guest speakers are Tina Nixon, founder and CEO of My Sista’s KeepHer, and Rochell Wallace, a social studies and special education teacher at Milwaukee Public Schools’ Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts.

Nixon designs and leads impactful workshops focused on healing from trauma, fostering self-confidence, team building and encouraging healthy relationships. She has worked with youth and young adults for over 25 years with a mission to inspire individuals to celebrate life, pursue their dreams, embrace self-love and cultivate self respect. In 2022, Nixon was honored with the YWCA SEW Impact Award for her dedication to creating positive change in her community. She is also the author of “My Sista’s KeepHer: A Journey to Heal Self & Heal Her,” a powerful guide for personal and collective healing.

Rochell Wallace is a devoted wife, mother of six children, and a passionate educator. She made the courageous decision to pursue her GED diploma after becoming a mother at 14 and leaving high school. She not only earned her GED, she earned an associate degree in science and became a certified medical assistant. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business.

Three student speakers will also address graduates. Angela Whitelow (YWCA), Evelyn Perez (MATC) and Ruby Davis (Dominican Women’s Center).
