MILWAUKEE — Rana Altenburg, vice president for public affairs at Marquette University, was elected to the board of directors of the Science Coalition, a national organization committed to advancing the importance of university research.

Established in 1994, the Science Coalition is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of more than 50 of the nation’s leading public and private research universities. It is dedicated to sustaining the federal government’s investment in fundamental scientific research as a means to stimulate the economy, spur innovation and drive American competitiveness.

TSC’s focus areas for 2019 include women in STEM, economic growth, national security and international competitiveness.

“University research is breaking ground in unparalleled ways across the country, and creating awareness is imperative for advancing the innovative work of Marquette researchers as well as our esteemed colleagues in the other Science Coalition institutions,” Altenburg said. “It is an honor to serve on this board.”

Other institutions making up the 50 TSC members include Harvard University, University of California, University of Notre Dame and University of Wisconsin.

Altenburg, who is responsible for Marquette’s governmental initiatives at the federal, state, county and city levels; community relations; university special events; and special projects of strategic importance to the university, is also president of Near West Side Partners, a member of the boards of directors of Business Improvement District No. 10, Wisconsin Avenue Milwaukee Development Corp., Seton Catholic Schools, The Wisconsin Group, and a member of TEMPO and Professional Dimensions.

Altenburg’s two-year term on the TSC board began earlier this year.
