Library entrance safety should be of utmost importance

A crash yesterday (Tuesday, January 7) at W. Locust St. and N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. sent two vehicles careening into the entrance area of the under-construction MLK Library (310 W. Locust), knocking down an awning and injuring a construction worker.

of the vehicles involved in the crash was fleeing from law enforcement, and collided with a private vehicle while running a red light at the intersection. The fleeing vehicle struck a post that was holding up the awning, before crashing into the building.

Miraculously and thankfully, it does not appear that the crash caused any life-threatening injuries.

However, things could have been MUCH different had there been bystanders or pedestrians present. Although there have already been substantive discussions regarding placing physical structures that are designed to keep visitors and pedestrians safe at and near that library entrance, I am requesting that the developers, MPL representatives, and the Department of Public Works to examine this important matter with even higher scrutiny and urgency.

We need visitors to the amazing future MLK Library – kids and adults alike – to feel and be safe enjoying this vital public amenity and neighborhood hub.
