Libertarian Party of Wisconsin Response To Trump Tariffs
With a stroke of a pen, President Trump has imposed the single largest tax hike on American consumers in decades. From 10% on energy (including 60% of our crude oil imports) to 25% on everything from off season fruits and vegetables to construction materials to affordable consumer goods, every American will be affected by Trump’s tariffs.
The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin (LPWI) rejects Trump’s impending trade war in the strongest possible terms. In response, Prime Minister Trudeau‘s cabinet announced a 25% tariff on C$155 billion of American imports. Those tariffs will trigger additional tariffs from Trump, which will trigger more tariffs from Canada.
Free and open markets are the only way to ensure the amount of competition that is required to reduce price and increase quality. Slapping blanket tariffs on everything that moves only ensures higher prices, fewer options, or more likely, both. We can only hope that cooler heads will prevail before nobody can afford anything.
