Legislative Republicans Continue to Ignore the Will of the People

Republican leaders ignore Governor Evers’ call for a special session to give voters a choice on popular policies

By - Oct 4th, 2022 01:05 pm

Madison—Today Legislative Republicans gaveled in and out of the special session Governor Evers called to create a pathway for voters to overturn Wisconsin’s archaic criminal abortion ban which passed in 1849 before women were allowed to vote. This is the eleventh out of twelve special sessions called by Governor Evers where Republicans have gaveled in and gaveled out with no action taken.

Representative Sara Rodriguez (D-Brookfield) released the following statement:

“Time after time this session Republicans have had the opportunity to address issues supported by the overwhelming majority of Wisconsinites, and each and every time they have refused to act. As legislators, it is our job to listen and be responsive to the people who we represent. Earlier this term Legislative Republicans refused to even discuss repealing an 1849 law that bans abortion with almost no exceptions that became law before women had the right to vote. Legislative Republicans have ignored the will of the people of Wisconsin.

“Wisconsinites deserve the opportunity to make their voices heard. By gaveling out today with no debate, Republicans have once again stolen that right. Wisconsinites deserve better.”
